Welcome to Cat’s Cove Communications!
Yes, I’ve changed my business name, and I’ll explain why.
I have crystal clear memories of my first day of work at Cat’s Cove Writing on Jan. 4, 2011. I woke up that morning, showered and got ready like I would for any regular work day. Except rather than heading to the front door to leave for the day, I took a 90-degree turn to the left and walked into my home office.
I felt like Homer Simpson on his first day working from home (although he worked hard to gain an enormous amount of weight so that he could stay home. Muumuus ensued for his daily attire – Photo Source). I didn’t know what to do expect to begin the process to start my at-home writing business.
The first orders of business included writing a business plan, putting together my homemade website and coming up with a name for my company. Oh, yes, and getting some clients.
That’s when I took my first coffee break.
I was overwhelmed and feeling green. And, so, I took it one step at a time.
First: the company name.
There was a long-running inside family joke about my possession of a nearby street sign stolen in high school that reads, “Cats Cove”. It played off my own name and I love me some alliteration. Just ask my former colleagues from the newspaper; I love a headline that’s either punched with a pun or packed with perfect alliteration. See what I did there?
There. Done. Cat’s Cove was born and that was the first step to creating my business.
So, what, exactly is my business, I asked myself? I then crafted a business plan that helped me to better articulate my purpose and goals for my company. I am a writer, and so I’d write for companies. This brought the third word to my company business: Cat’s Cove Writing.
Since that first day 3.5 years ago, I’ve been fortunate to have done a lot of writing. From blogs to website content and from press releases to advertorials, I’ve put together hundreds of thousands of words for clients from across the country.
But here’s the biggest thing I’ve learning from Cat’s Cove Writing: that there’s so much more to working with someone than writing on their behalf.
The biggest job is about listening to their stories and soaking in their words. Although many people don’t feel confident in their writing skills, their passion for their own work is obvious. Sometimes you need to bounce those thoughts and ideas off someone else who can help craft them into phrases and paragraphs (again, with the alliteration) that truly reflect how you feel.
It’s all about communicating one person’s goals onto paper – or the screen.
As I near my fourth-year anniversary, I wanted to change my company name to demonstrate that I’m doing more than offering writing services; rather, I’m providing communications strategies that help get your message across loud and clear. I’m here to listen, chat and help you better define what you’d like to say about your business, organization or yourself.
With that, I’m excited to announce my company name change. It’s now called Cat’s Cove Communications. Mind-blowing, I know. Yet I feel that it best reflects what I offer and what I love do to most, which is why the name change comes today.
If you’d like to chat about your communications strategy, I’d love to hear from you at email@example.com
And – don’t worry – I won’t wear a muumuu to our first meeting. But no promises on the second.
