This Friday, my son will start school.
Is he ready? I think so. But…
He just turns four in December.
He keeps asking if I’ll be coming with him.
And he’s not yet totally confident in the bathroom department.
I’m nervous for him. I hope he makes friends. And I obviously want the best for him.
I’m sincerely grateful that I get to meet and greet him at the bus stop, and that by working from home, I have the flexibility to attend his school functions and be on call if anything comes up at school.
But from a selfish standpoint?
I’ve gotta figure out how the crap I’m gonna manage a six-hour work day.
My son will get picked up on the bus at 8:30 a.m. and dropped off at 3 p.m. (Last one on, first one off!).
*nervous, hysterical laughter*
Realistically, I won’t hit my work desk until 9 a.m. and I’ll have to wrap up by 2:45 p.m. each day.
Rather than wallow in the scarcity of my work hours, I’ve gotta come up with a plan that works for the whole family.
Here’s my plan:
- Put him in after-school care twice a week: It’s $9 per day, and it will give me an extra 3 hours of work each week. I’ve gotta drop the mom guilt on that one.
- Get his sister dropped off at daycare before his school bus pick-up time: this means waking them up at 7 a.m. and pushing (nudging?) them out the door. The snowsuit season is going to be thrilling.
- Do the Snack & Show Combo: When he gets dropped off at 3 p.m., we’ll come home and do the Snack & Show Combo. I know he’ll need to decompress after school and while he does that, I’ll prep dinner.
- Time Manage Like a Mother: I teach two college courses and have to integrate some major time management skills into my remaining limited hours. Time blocking and social media resilience will be key. I don’t see napping in my work future, damn it!
This new season of our lives is going to have its ups and downs. There’s no doubt. I’m trying to be realistic with my expectations of both myself and of my son all while working in and on my business, meal prepping and nap dodging.
People – how do you deal with the school time zones? Give me your tips!
